I'm having a hard time with Creeping Charlie and other weeds this year. A little while ago, I talked about my desire to establish a clover lawn. I noticed just this week that the clover areas seem thicker and wider, but it's still only in patches and not consistent. Also, the Creeping Charlie is intermingled with it and I don't like its broad leaves, they are way too distracting.

The one thing I'm not sure about is how to eliminate the Creeping Charlie while not killing the clover. The problem is that all the weed killers I've seen are broadleaf killers and that includes clover in its definition of "a weed". I have a doubt that the clover would "choke" out the Creeping Charlie, but maybe if I overseed with some clover, it would make it harder for the Creeping Charlie to spread next year and the years after?

A few weeks ago, I seeded the lawn with new grass seed with a spreader after some dethatching and mild tilling, but I have yet to go ahead with any aggressive clover plans. I came across this article that talks about seeding and how to get a clover lawn to "take". I'll check out the Halifax Seed Company as listed, but I'm thinking a U.S. company might be a better choice for me (I have no idea if plant seed is allowed to cross the border). Google ads came through for me and led me to Outside Pride, where the seed is priced at $35 USD for a 10-lb bag of Dutch White Clover seed. Is that a good price? I have no idea but I ordered it yesterday online...stay tuned.

Personally, I like creeping charlie – I remember always seeing those little purple flowers in our lawn when I was a kid. The ones I hate are dandelions and those prickly broadleaf weeds. They grow too fast, too tall, and dominate the yard. My lawn is covered in dandelions right now, and my neighbours all use sprays, so it makes mine stand out all the more.
At least I saw a couple healthy clover patches starting when I ran over it with the mower the other day. I only had time to do the front, so now my lawn has a mullet.
One of these days I’m going to get around to planting some clover. There are places that sell seed for creeping charlie under it’s other name, I can’t recall what it is.

  2. The flowers are nice, but I still say the broad leaves of creeping charlie are ugly and distracting when mixed in grass and small-leaf clover.

Creeping charlie=ground ivy. I’ve got some seed if you want it . . .

I’m planning to turn my lawn into creeping lemon thyme or maybe mint. One of these days. It’s so hot I figure another week and the grass will be all done growing for this year.

Are you kidding? Creeping Charlie is one of the worst weeds out there. It’s destroying my lawn and I can’t get rid of it.
