I was aware of <a href="http://htmlpurifier.org/comparison.html" rel="nofollow">HTML Purifier</a>, but not that it had been turned into a WP plugin. Unfortunately it weighs in at around 1.6MB of PHP code - but perhaps if it's only used for comment submission that won't be serious server load. Peter, very cool – thank you for the links!
