{"id":347,"date":"2007-03-15T12:04:50","date_gmt":"2007-03-15T18:04:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.codedread.com\/archives\/2007\/03\/15\/apple-hedges-its-bets-pisses-ian-off\/"},"modified":"2007-03-15T12:04:50","modified_gmt":"2007-03-15T18:04:50","slug":"apple-hedges-its-bets-pisses-ian-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.codedread.com\/blog\/archives\/2007\/03\/15\/apple-hedges-its-bets-pisses-ian-off\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple Hedges Its Bets, Pisses Ian Off"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Via <a href=\"http:\/\/virtuelvis.com\/archives\/2007\/03\/shitstorm-coming\">Arve<\/a>, Apple has made a <a href=\"http:\/\/lists.whatwg.org\/pipermail\/whatwg-whatwg.org\/2007-March\/010129.html\">strong statement<\/a> that they have <span class=\"definition\" title=\"Intellectual Property Rights\">IPR<\/span> on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whatwg.org\/specs\/web-apps\/current-work\/#the-canvas\">Canvas<\/a> functionality.  What does it mean?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>To quote Apple's response:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At this time, Apple reserves all rights in its IP Rights and makes no<br \/>\nrepresentations as to Apple\u2019s willingness or unwillingness to license these<br \/>\nIP Rights.  However, in the event that the Web Applications 1.0 Working<br \/>\nDraft, dated March 24, 2005, becomes part of a formalized draft<br \/>\nstandard at W3C or IETF, for example, Apple is prepared to address the<br \/>\ndisclosure\/licensing rules of such organizations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This brings back echoes of <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/cwilso\/archive\/2007\/01\/10\/you-me-and-the-w3c-aka-reinventing-html.aspx\">this entry<\/a> from Chris Wilson (of the Microsoft's IE team) where he talks about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whatwg.org\/\">WHATWG<\/a> and states:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nI was asked personally to join the WHAT WG over a year ago.  I had a back-and-forth discussion in email with several of the members of the WHAT-WG. ... I said \u201cyou have no patent policy, and that makes it impossible for me to join.\u201d  The response was something along the lines of \u201cyeah, we should get one of those.\u201d  There is still no patent policy for the WHAT-WG that I\u2019m aware of \u2013 and more importantly, no commitment from those making contributions that they are contributing any relevant IP to those implementing the WHAT-WG specifications, and in my personal opinion that makes the WHAT-WG irresponsible in ensuring that their specifications are actually \u201cfree\u201d... <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"definition\" title=\"I Am Not A Lawyer\">IANAL<\/span>, so I can't tell what Apple's latest means to the WHATWG or HTML5.  I can't make out how much Apple is claiming they own.  Surely the original implementation\/specification, but what about any improvements the WHATWG members have <em>already<\/em> made?<\/p>\n<p>All I know is if I was Mozilla and Opera, I'd be a little concerned that a feature I <em>have already implemented<\/em> in a released version of my browser might suddenly be in some sort of IP violation at a later date.  Is Mozilla willing to pay Apple for the rights to continue supporting this technology?<\/p>\n<p>How <a href=\"http:\/\/weblogs.mozillazine.org\/roadmap\/archives\/2007\/03\/the_open_web_and_its_adversari.html\" title=\"Brendan Eich Defends Open Web Technologies\">timely<\/a>!  Maybe this will finally convince the Mozilla Corp to put some <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/weblogs.mozillazine.org\/tor\/archives\/2007\/03\/svg_priorities_in_firefox_3.html#c852287\">some frippin' paid resources<\/a><\/strong> onto their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/Graphics\/SVG\/\" title=\"Scalable Vector Graphics\">SVG<\/a> implementation to protect those open standards it supposedly <a href=\"http:\/\/weblogs.mozillazine.org\/roadmap\/archives\/2007\/03\/the_open_web_and_its_adversari.html\" title=\"Brendan Eich Defends Open Web Technologies\">cares so much about<\/a>?  Wake up, <span class=\"definition\" title=\"Mozilla Corporation\">MoCo<\/span>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Via Arve, Apple has made a strong statement that they have IPR on the Canvas functionality.
