Amazing Adult Fantasy #14 (April 1962) includes the short story “The Man In The Sky!”. In it, Tad Carter<\/a> is born to an atomic scientist and later develops mutant powers of telepathy and telekinesis. As a young socially awkward college student, he approaches apparent acquaintances and uses his powers on them, trying to convince them he can teach them how to do it (??). Even though Tad clearly wants to help humanity, his behavior naturally leads to feelings of resentment, creepiness, and fear.<\/p>\n\n\n

But before they can beat the snot out of him for being different, Tad is mysteriously lifted up into the sky and taken away. He receives the thoughts from more powerful mutants who are holed up waiting for mankind to learn to accept mutants.<\/p>\n\n\n

Maybe he was pulled away by Vincent Farnsworth<\/a> and his acquaintances? Well, it’s definitely not the first mutants shouldn’t be trusted<\/a> story, nor is it the first mutants live among us<\/a> story, but it does pull almost all the pieces together, all that’s left are some flashy costumes, megalomaniac mutants, and the letter X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
