865 – More Third-Rate Villains: Chronos

Third-rate heroes like The Atom only deserve third-rate villains like Chronos the Time Thief, who debuts in Atom #3 (Aug 1962). Naturally, Chronos’ schtick is all about time, and in this story, I think literally every panel has him using the word “time” in his dialog, to the point of utter ridiculousness.

Chronos is visually distinctive in the same way that a clown is visually distinctive: His pants are black and white stripes, his shirt is green, he has yellow gloves, boots, and a cape, and he has a white mask with clock hands on it and a cut-out for his eyes and mouth and ears. His gimmicks include a “sandstorm hourglass” that sprays out grains of sand and a watch that shoots its arms like tiny spears.

I know the early 1960s isn’t well known for its compelling character development or writing, but I am getting pretty tired angry at lackluster plots, characters, and dialog like this.
