Showcase #37 introduces another set of DC “silver age” heroes: The Metal Men. A series of artificially intelligent robots impractically made of individual precious metals and each given specific powers and personalities specific to their metal. The cast of characters includes their creator Dr Will Magnus and the token female robot “Tina” made of Platinum.

Tina is “so realistic” she has all the 1960s foibles of women. She’s beautiful, has a fiery temper, ceaselessly and awkwardly pursues her human creator romantically, throws tantrums when she doesn’t get her way, etc etc. Still she has some Mr. Fantastic-like ability to reshape her body, so that’s kind of cool:

I never really liked the Metal Man. I found the personalities too annoying but the fact that they didn’t always get along shows that maybe some of Marvel was already rubbing off on DC? I also find it weird that each of them could be destroyed or melted down, but Dr. Magnus could just re-create them again for the next adventure.
