Charlton’s Space Adventures #33 (January 1960) introduces a new super-hero: Captain Atom! Created by Joe Gill and Steve Ditko, Captain Adam was a physics prodigy, chemist, and ballistics genius but woops, he drops a screwdriver and is trapped on a rocket carrying an atomic bomb that detonates in space. He rematerializes soon after back near the launch pad.

He explains that he disintegrated and is able to re-integrate any time he wants, but that he is lethally radioactive. The army fashions him a blue-ish suit made of”diulustel shielding”.

Adam also demonstrates that he has powers and can take a tiny portion of his body mass into an enormous amount of energy and take flight, achieving speeds upwards of 20,000 miles per hour:

He is given a flashy blue/silver suit and a codename, Captain Atom! I’m not sure why the cover has a red-gold suit while the interior story shows a blue-silver one.

Captain Atom was morphed into Doctor Manhattan, a pivotal character in Alan Moore’s Watchmen epic in the 1980s.
