The blog post title contains the spoiler, but Ultra-Boy is a pretty well-known character in Legion lore these days that it’s hardly that much of a spoiler. A mysterious super-powered teen shows up in Smallville to uncover Superboy’s secret identity, accompanied by a stern, elderly man dressed in similar clothes.

We get some cat-and-mouse where the teen first thinks that Pete Ross is Superboy, but is soon thwarted when Superboy shows up and talks to Pete. The teen takes on an identity of Gary Crane and soon uses his “penetra-vision” to uncover that Clark Kent is Superboy, right at the time Clark discovers Gary also has a secret identity.

The mysterious motives of Ultra-Boy are not immediately revealed, with Clark thinking the worst. However, when Pete Ross accidentally gets trapped in a lead-lined timed bank vault, and Superboy cannot see inside the vault to avoid injuring Pete, Ultra-Boy reveals he is Jo Nah from the 30th Century and this is his initiation rites for the Legion of Super-Heroes. Unfortunately this completely overlooks the fact that apparently everyone knows Superboy’s identity in the future.

And who is that intimidating silver-haired, similarly-dressed man that’s been following Ultra-Boy around like a crime boss? Turns out his name is Marla and is the “Legion’s new senior advisor”, officially observing how Ultra-Boy performs.
