341 – Volta Yoda

The main villains of the Planet Comics feature “The Lost World” are the Voltamen – reptilian conquerors of Earth. The Voltamen speak in Yoda-speak (thirty years before Yoda was invented), often placing the verbs at the end of sentences. Here is a sympathetic Voltamen from Planet Comics #47 (December 1946).

340 – Just a Mister Nobody

Howard Purcell continues his “Just a Story” anthology series in Comic Cavalcade #19 (December 1946) but introduces a character called “Mister Nobody” as a kind of framing device. I believe “Mister Nobody” is really the first appearance of Johnny Peril. Johnny Peril and “Just a Story” are precursors to the horror anthology genre in comics.

Not only that, but those cars definitely seem like 1940s models and not 1920s models. Continuity errors and anachronisms abound!

334 – Tommy Tomorrow!

In Real Fact Comics #6 (November 1946), the character of Tommy Tomorrow is introduced, stretching the bounds of what I might call “fact”. Beyond experimenting with the supporting cast, Superboy is also aging. He was definitively ten years old at the beginning of 1946 and now appears to be almost an adolescent – maybe twelve years […]
