No, we’re not quite done with the 1950s yet. One or two more interesting bits appeared on the newsstand in December 1959. This time, it’s the debut of Aqualad, a predictable sidekick for Aquaman. Aqualad is never given a name in this first story, but harkening back to the story of Aquagirl, Aquaman explains to him that his purple eyes means he is a “rejected specimen” from Atlantis.
Aqualad explains that he’s had a fear of fish all his life. Within a few panels, Aquaman cures him of these fears and sends him back to Atlantis, but the lad returns to Aquaman, who is grateful now to have a young boy companion, er I mean grateful to have a supporting cast finally! o_O
