Atlas / Marvel Comics introduced a new comic book in March 1961: Amazing Adventures. It’s just another fantasy book, but what’s there are a couple interesting things about this book.

First, the creators decided to introduce its first ongoing character since Jimmy Woo and the Yellow Claw: Dr. Droom and this character sticks around in the Marvel Universe, which is only a few months from kicking off. Dr. Droom (later renamed to Dr. Druid) is basically a proto Dr. Strange, complete with the Western physician going to the orient to save a Tibetan Llama, only to learn that it is his job to tackle users of the dark mystical arts instead.

Amazingly, the Llama even changes Dr. Droom’s physical appearance from bald white guy to bald asian guy. That’s a more “suitable appearance” for his new role, right? Is this white-washing? Yellowface? I can’t even tell anymore.

The second interesting thing about Amazing Adventures is that the magazine eventually changed its name a couple times over the course of its publication and ended at “Amazing Fantasy”. Its last issue is the debut of the most popular Marvel character: Spider-Man.
