346 – Eerie!

In January 1947, Avon Periodicals published Eerie Comics #1, a one-shot horror comic. The comic features anthological horror stories and (as Wikipedia says) is “credited with establishing the horror comics genre” that EC Comics came to dominate. I have to also give credit to “Just a Story” (DC) and “The Spirit” (Quality) as contributing to […]

345 – Super Clueless

In Action Comics #106 (January 1947), Clark is told he is a long-lost heir to an English barony. But what’s interesting (as a reader 70 years later) is the blurb in which it is revealed that Clark doesn’t even know he is not human. At this point in his history, Clark does not know anything […]

344 – Super Mental

Right next to the lackluster comedic story of Lois-as-Superwoman, Superman #45 (January 1947) also featured a pretty cool story in which Superman is actually physically challenged for once! An inter-dimensional being appears on Earth and starts collecting Earthling specimens for his trophy collection. What ensues is a pretty intense battle between Superman and this unnamed […]

343 – Neptune Perkins Team-up

Neptune Perkins was a minor character introduced in the Hawkman story in Flash #66 (1945) as a sort of powered-down version of Aquaman. 342 – Superwoman Returns!

We have seen Lois as Superwoman before, but that was just a fever dream. Superman #45 (January 1947) features the return of Lois-as-Superwoman when Hocus and Pocus, two magicians, grant her Superman’s powers. Hocus and Pocus are two clueless, recurring comic relief characters with no actual powers, but somehow Superman is always forced into performing […]

341 – Volta Yoda

The main villains of the Planet Comics feature “The Lost World” are the Voltamen – reptilian conquerors of Earth. The Voltamen speak in Yoda-speak (thirty years before Yoda was invented), often placing the verbs at the end of sentences. Here is a sympathetic Voltamen from Planet Comics #47 (December 1946).

340 – Just a Mister Nobody

Howard Purcell continues his “Just a Story” anthology series in Comic Cavalcade #19 (December 1946) but introduces a character called “Mister Nobody” as a kind of framing device. I believe “Mister Nobody” is really the first appearance of Johnny Peril. Johnny Peril and “Just a Story” are precursors to the horror anthology genre in comics.

339 – The First Evil Speedster

In another “Liar’s Club” story, the Flash relates the story of “The Race Through Time!” in Comic Cavalcade #19 (December 1946). Gangster Tag Madden steals a serum which gives him super speed and The Flash must race him through the ancient past and the distance future. In it, we also get the first occurrence and […]

338 – Catwoman and Mistletoe

The Catwoman continues as a blonde in a Christmas-themed story in Batman #39 (December 1946). Batman and Robin wear white suits to camouflage themselves in the snow. In addition to a smooch under mistletoe, Catwoman also proposes to Batman that they could rule the criminal world, but of course Batman rejects both offers.

337 – Robin Solo

Robin replaces the Guardian and the Newsboy Legion in Star-Spangled Comics #65 (December 1946) as the main feature. The story itself is an uninspired affair in which Robin has to outwit a corrupt reform school.
